# Chapter One: The Asters Come Back
The fog horn sounded at six-fourteen, which meant Iris was already four minutes late for the morning she'd planned.
She stood in her kitchen with one shoe on and the other in her hand, listening. The horn came again — low, sustained, a sound that didn't so much travel through air as settle into it, the way water settled into sand. She'd heard it every morning for a year now, and it still caught her somewhere behind the sternum. A sound like that wasn't meant to warn. It was meant to remind.
She put the second shoe on. The laces were damp. Everything was damp in October — the doorframe, the dish towel she'd left too close to the window, the leather of her satchel hanging from its hook by the door. The Olympic Peninsula didn't do autumn the way the rest of the country did. There were no burnished maples, no pumpkin-colored hills rolling to the horizon. Here, autumn meant the fog thickened, the rain found new angles, and the green turned so deep it looked almost black in the early mornings.
Iris liked it. She'd liked it since the first week, when she'd arrived from the East Coast with three boxes of books, a cat carrier that turned out to be unnecessary because the cat hadn't arrived yet, and a quiet terror she'd mistaken for excitement.
That had been a year ago. Today.
