# Chapter One: January Light

The fog had arrived three days before the new year and showed no sign of leaving.

Iris woke to it pressing against her bedroom window like something patient, something that had nowhere else to be. Grey-white, featureless, so thick that the cottage might have been the only building left in the world. She lay still under the quilt her grandmother had sewn forty years ago, listening to the absence of sound that fog brought to Alder Bay — no gulls, no distant ferry horn, no wind in the shore pines along Harbour Street. Just the soft mechanical tick of the kitchen clock in the next room and the weight of Orison at her feet, a warm crescent of silver-grey fur curled against her ankle.

The brass key lay flat against her sternum, warmer than her skin.

It had been doing that since mid-December. The leather cord held it snug beneath her sleep shirt, and in the mornings she'd find it radiating a faint heat that had nothing to do with her body temperature. She touched it through the cotton. Warm, steady, like pressing a palm to sun-warmed stone. She'd stopped being startled by it. The warmth had become a kind of greeting — the key's way of saying good morning, if keys said things, which she wasn't prepared to argue they didn't.

Orison stretched, arching his spine so hard his back paws trembled. He opened his eyes — pale green, unnervingly focused — and regarded her with the evaluative patience of a creature who had decided something about her weeks ago and was waiting for her to catch up.
