# Chapter 1: Dawn Ride West

The tea is still hot enough to curl steam in the grey light, and that is the only warmth that matters right now.

I cup both hands around the tin mug and watch the rim of the world go from charcoal to iron to the thinnest possible line of gold. The rift country doesn't do sunrises the way the Garden does, there's no gradual blush, no slow unfurling of color across honest soil. Out here the light just arrives, thin and uncommitted, as if it's checking whether anything survived the night before bothering to stay.

Bramble shifts in the sling against my chest, her dense weight settling lower as she adjusts from sleep to the alert stillness that means she's deciding whether or not the morning has earned her attention. One oversized ear swivels toward the fire. The other tracks something in the pale distance, wind, maybe, or memory.

Brother Ash appears at my shoulder so quietly that I don't hear him until his sandals scrape the stones. He carries his own mug in both hands, the carved walking staff tucked under one arm, and he stands beside me for a long moment before he speaks.

"Third night," he says.
